Vaccine Safety
There have been numerous warnings that Trump is rushing covid vaccine development to help with reelection, which could prevent a vaccine from being adequately tested, raising safety issues. Remarkably, most articles don’t consider any other incentives besides Trump’s public comments (which are inappropriate). For example, under the current system, a company that manufactures an unsafe vaccine faces no liability. Seth Mnookin notes that “Ford signed legislation that transferred responsibility for vaccine injuries from manufacturers to the federal government”, establishing “the basis for the federally funded vaccine compensation program that exists today.” And Reagan signed legislation “to eliminate the potential financial liability of vaccine manufacturers due to vaccine injury claims”. This legal framework is a much greater safety concern than Trump’s comments, although I haven’t seen it mentioned in any piece on potential covid vaccine concerns.
